chapter 8 – silent witness

“I stared at the mountain rising over me. Empty. It was a pointless thing to have done – climb up it, across it, and down it. Stupid! It looked perfect; so clean and untouched, and we had changed nothing, It was beautiful, immaculate, but it left me empty. I had been on it too long, and it had taken everything.” Page 117

through different choice of words selected this passage sets mood and tone. the mood of the text refers to the atmosphere or environment of the setting which the character is in. in this passage the mood is set through using the words such as “beautiful, immaculate” using these adjectives  forces the reader to imagine something beautiful or immaculate, in this case putting them in a positive state of mind which sets a mood for the reader of happiness.

the tone is set through the narratives attitude towards what is happening for example “it was a pointless thing to have done” this shows Joe’s attitude towards his decision which helps the reader gain an understanding of the characters state of mind in the current situation, words like pointless are what set the tone of the situation. it creates the idea of Joe being disappointed with his decision and shows that he feels it was waste of time.
